lyrics

I Don’t Want To Tell This Story
Ray Rodgers

I don’t want to tell this story,
as sordid as it is.
I’d have to hurt and suffer,
just to push it from my lips.
My lips!
Clench my gut.
Clench my fists.
I don’t want to feel like this.

Surely there is someone else,
who could take this story on,
write it down, learn it well,
and sing it as their song.
Their song!
And, sing it to the babies.
Sing it to the throngs.
Sing it loud, and clear. and true,
so I don’t have to sing along.

This story breaks my heart,
every time I breathe,
every time I look up,
and find it did not leave.

I don’t want to tell this story,
this noisome little tale.
It’s enough to break the hearts of men,
and make the mommas wail.
Mommas wail!
Tear away their hopes.
Tear away their dreams.
Tear away the promise that
they never have to feel like me.

But, I guess there’s really no one else
who could tell this story well.
I guess I’ll have to do it.
I’ll have to write my way through hell.
Through Hell!
And then, sing it to the babies.
Sing it to the throngs.
Sing it loud, and clear, and true,
so they don’t have to sing along.

This story breaks my heart,
every time I bleed,
every time I wash up,
but still find it on my sleeve.
